Wicked the movie made its theatrical debut on November 22nd and has already profited almost $400 million world wide, as of time of publishing, for a good reason. The movie is based off of the hit Broadway musical, which is inspired by the book by Gregory Maguire. The story is set as a prequel to the children’s book The Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum. The movie follows the notable characters of Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba the Wicked Witch, starting with them as college roommatesteenagers who were set at odds. The book originally sets the main characters as teenagers. They eventually found friendship after initially loathing each other. The plot eventually overlaps with the original story, whenwith the witches go back to being atat odds again. The movie is split into two parts, the first of which is in theaters currentlynow. The second part will premiere next November. The story being split in half seems to be one of only a few drawbacks, as the movie has received an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes — a certified fresh rating. A South freshman said “I really liked the movie, I thought it was really good. I liked the part where she sang defying gravity, it gave me chills.”
It combines both the magic of Oz with the real life lessons that anyone can take away. It teaches looking beyond appearances, the importance of good relationships and the complexity of human nature. Overall, anyone who is a fan of the Broadway show, the stars, Ariana Grande and Cythina Erivo, or just looking for an enjoyable show, should definitely check it out.
