On May 2TKst, 2024, Middletown’s second annual community walk for suicide awareness and prevention took place. The “Be the Difference Walk” was created in 2023 by now-senior Piper Wyman. As many individuals in Middletown have been affected in some way by these difficult losses, Wyman felt not enough was being done. “My dad inspired me to take action,” she said. “I felt like a change needed to be made.” Today, the walk aims to raise awareness, honor the lives lost due to suicide, and to bring our community together.
To be able to begin this type of an organization, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. When Wyman first had the idea, she called the Mayor of Middletown Tony Perry to schedule a meeting. Once she got his full support, she was able to start planning the walk and get people involved. Wyman had to reach out to others and get a group of volunteers, spread the word, make posters and flyers, and ask local companies for donations.
Last year, there were about 50 volunteers, and nearly 220 walkers. This year, Wyman’s goal was to double the amount of participating walkers. Keeley Sheridan, who participated in the walk last year, stated, “Everyone came together, and was very happy to be surrounded by each other. It made everyone around us appreciate the people and the little things in life.”
While Wyman is headed to college at San Diego State University next year, she plans ton continue to be involved with the walk. “It will absolutely continue,” she says, “I’ll be passing it on to other South students and will be overseeing the major decision making.” The “Be the Difference” Walk is an amazing contribution to our community and will no doubt continue to help save lives and stop suicide.
