The girls cross country team won their division for the eleventh year in a row, completing an undefeated season. The team is looking forward to invitational meets such as the Monmouth County championships, Shore Conference and are looking for a repeat state championship win. Coach Clifton explains that both girls who love to run, and girls who have never run before, have found a program that is both fun and helps them get fit.
The boys cross country team won their division this year with a record of 8-0. In mid-October the team matched up against the best teams in the Shore to compete in the Monmouth County Championships. Despite having a “young team” the boys have “stepped up” and “learned to embrace training and racing” per Coach Bayers.
When spoken to, the tennis team was finishing up the season with a record of 8 to 7, an outstanding performance given the “amazing teams they have played this year”. The girls began tryouts in mid August and have played through October. Coach Wills has expressed her pride in the team, stating “Tennis is a very mental sport and the girls have truly worked towards having a growth mindset and never giving up.”
The cheerleaders have put together an amazing half time performance, which is showcased at every home football game. Coach Krellin expressed her excitement for the annual Thanksgiving day game, in which the entire team, of over 70, will perform together. She states “I am looking forward to seeing the squad perform halftime on Thanksgiving… It should be a great performance.”
The boy’s varsity soccer team finished the season with a record of 7-4-3. The team made it to the second round of the shore conference tournament. Despite this loss Coach Riverso expresses his pride in his team, a group of players who had never started together prior to this season, who have made themselves number two in the state section.
The girl’s varsity soccer team finished the season with an impressive record of 13-3-1, winning the A North division. Despite a tough loss in the quarterfinals in the shore conference tournament, the team is looking for a repeat state tournament win, Coach Barry statesd, “I think we have a really good opportunity to win a championship there”.
The gymnastics team has somersaulted their way to an amazing record of 8-1 after working hard since August. They compete in regular season meets, the shore conference tournament, sectionals, and possibly states depending on their score in the sectionals. They have high hopes for doing well at states because last year, they were fourth in all of New Jersey, and are dreaming even bigger this year with a goal of being in first or second. “Gymnastics is an amazing team and individual sport. I love this team; we are a family supporting each other in life and gymnastics,” Coach White stated.
The football team has had an intense season with a record of 3-4, and have only lost two of those games by a really close three points. Their key win over Long Branch has guaranteed them a spot in the playoffs. JV and freshman are also doing very well, JV with a record of 2-1 and freshman with a record of 3-1. “I think football’s the greatest team sport,” Coach Tomo stated. “We have over 60 kids on the team right now, and everyone plays a pivotal role in our success.”
Competing alongside the marching band and performing at South’s football games, the color guard has had great performances this year. This season’s show was called “Jackpot” and included the songs “Viva Las Vegas”, “Luck Be a Lady”, “The Gambler”, and “Poker Face”. With 5 out of the 9 team members being new to the sport, the 4 experienced performers stepped up their game and helped the newer students grow and improve. “The current members are a caring, passionate, and determined group. They have created a great community amongst themselves and with the band where everyone is welcome,” Coach Belke commented.
