Beginning this year at South, a new club has been created that encourages creativity and provides a home for all artists. The club is called The National Art Honors Society (NAHS). The society is specifically designed for high school students who have an outstanding ability for visual art. It also works to bring art education to the attention of schools around the world. Once a member, students are eligible for different awards and college-based scholarships. Also, students and sponsors can attend the group’s national convention and are allowed to submit articles and artwork for publication in the NAHS News. NAHS News is the official newsletter of the National Art Honor Society. “Published twice a year, it features articles on careers in art, portfolio preparation, NAHS chapter activities, student artwork, and scholarships.”
The student who brought National Art Honors Society to the attention of Middletown South was Tricia Romano. Tricia is a senior at South and has just recently found a love for the art community. She believes art is a beautiful resource for students of every grade and encourages anyone with an interest to join.
Tricia describes NAHS as an “association that recognizes students, nation-wide, for his or her artistic ability. It offers scholarships and is a really big self-esteem boost for art students who basically go unnoticed.”
Anyone who has an interest in any field of art can join. Once everything is settled, meetings will most likely be held after school once a week, every other week.
