The Backstory: The song’s release has led people to believe that the song is about the 18-year-old singer’s relationship with her co-star Joshua Bassett from High School Musical: The Musical Series. Speculations first started on January 4th, when Olivia announced the release of her song. About an hour later, Joshua announced the release of his upcoming single “Lie, lie, lie.” Olivia and Joshua were rumored to be dating within the past year, but neither publicly confirmed the relationship. Breakup rumors began surfacing in the summer of 2020, when Olivia posted a TikTok where she says, “You think you can hurt my feelings?” and captioned the video, “And that’s on failed relationships.” Around this time, photos began surfacing of Joshua and Sabrina Carpenter on a date, sparking dating rumors.
In “Drivers License,” Olivia sings about a blonde girl who is much older than she is; Sabrina is both blonde and four years older than Olivia. Olivia also sings, “Guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me,” and fans have speculated that Joshua’s 2020 song “Anyone Else” is about Olivia. Lastly, and probably the most important clue of all, Olivia shared that Joshua was the person to teach her how to drive–which might be why the song is called “Drivers License.”
“Drivers License” is cutting through the muck of 2021 in a major but simple way. That’s because the song is of this specific moment. For American teenagers during the pandemic, everybody can somehow relate to this song whether it’s about crushes, dreaming of the future, or negotiating freedom with their parents. It’s a sad song, but it’s an accessible type of sad. Heartbreak is one of the most common experiences for teenagers, yet plenty of people are able to joke about it on social media.
How To Find It: “Drivers License” soared to No. 1 on the Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music charts in just one week of its release. It set the record for being streamed over 17 million times in one day, the most for a song in a single day ever.
