The 98th Oscars was held on Sunday March 15, 2026. Conan O’Brien hosted this year.
Some movies that were nominated were Sinners, Frankenstein, One Battle After Another, Hamnet and Sentimental Value. The night celebrated many legends within the industry as well as up and comers. The Oscars serve as great recognition to stories all over the world.
The supporting actress award went to Jessie Buckley for her role as Agnes in Hamnet. In this movie she played a mother of three kids. She was the first Irish winner of Best Actress in the Oscars. She acknowledged all the mothers in the world and dedicated her award to the “beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart” and she thanked her husband.
Amy Madigin won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Aunt Gladys in the horror film Weapons. This is her first Oscar win and took place 40 years after her first nomination in 1986. The movie Weapons was a big step for the horror genre in awards. Usually they are overlooked in award seasons and it was the first win for the genre since 2011.
The movie Sinners won a total of 4 awards during the night. Also, Sinners set the record for most nominations having a total of 16. Best Actor went to Micheal B. Jordan for his dual role in the vampire film, Sinner. He played both Stack and Smoke in the film. He received a standing ovation and thanked his family and supporters. The film also won for Best Cinematography by Autumn Durald Arkapaw. She is the first woman to be nominated and win in this category. She asked all the women to stand up in the theater to acknowledge their presence. Her win was very important to women in the industry.
The action movie, One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson was nominated 13 times, and ultimately won 6 awards. Paul Thomas Anderson was awarded Best Director for the first time in his career. Best Supporting Actor was given to Sean Penn, despite this being his first Oscar he was a no show. The movie was also the first time winner of Best Casting, a new category this year. The picture also won best adapted screen play and best editing. One Battle After Another was awarded Best Picture, beating Sinners and making them the most awarded show of the evening.
There was a rare tie in the live action short category won by The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva. The announcer joked “Ironic that the short film Oscar’s going to take twice as long”. This tie was the seventh in Academy Award history and the first since 2013.
Frankenstein won for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. All of these categories were done by Kate Hawley. The movie is highly recognized for its craft and beautiful pieces.
Music is an important part of the film industry, and was also honored throughout the night. Miles Canton from Sinners performed “I Lied to You”, a song nominated live at the award ceremony. Sinners won Best Original Score, which was awarded to Ludwig Goransson who composed the score. The second performance of the night was the song “Golden” from the animated movie Kpop Demon Hunters. The cartoon won Best Original Song, which was sung by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and REI AMI.
