The PA: The Sport We Should Have Been Talking About…

How did this fly over our heads? Middletown South Field Hockey went 11-0 in their conference, secured the A North division, and stands at 15-2 overall! I know we hear about it on the morning announcements, but why wasn’t this a bigger deal? Can you comprehend the level of proficiency exercised? This was the farthest thing from expected; Middletown South was not ranked as a powerhouse team coming into the season, but, clearly, the girls have defied all expectations and made a quantum leap in terms of sheer dominance. Game after game, it was blowout after blowout. On the road, or at home, it didn’t matter. Look them up for yourself, and you’ll see their impressive 2018 track record of over 12 shutouts. While they were upset in overtime by Colts Neck in the Shore Conference Tournament (after a first round bye), they will most certainly bounce back against Long Branch on Monday. South managed to only lose to Red Bank Catholic, the team recognized as best in the Shore Conference, by only one goal. Only one! I applaud the efforts of the girls and of coach Jordan Hickman for turning around a team that stood at 0-12-1 at one point last year. They reeled in some wins at the end of that season, and that momentum has carried over immensely into this one. This year’s field hockey team is historic, and it is a shame that, while they were recognized a bit, they weren’t recognized enough.
