Serving as a prequel within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel follows Vers, a Kree soldier who finds herself on a foreign Earth following capture by enemy Skrulls. While on Earth, she teams with a younger Nick Fury to stop the Skrulls before they can find a hyperspace engine, an invention that threatens the Kree way of life. However, while on Earth, Vers makes some important discoveries that contribute to her overall identity crisis arc.
This movie is sadly one of the weaker entries in the Marvel Universe and most of that has to do with the mildly exciting villains. If you have seen Guardians of the Galaxy, the twist of the movie most likely held no shock factor, as it was largely predictable. Even factoring the twist out, the villains are mostly forgettable. The main thing that I remember was that one looked like Widowmaker from Overwatch. The beginning of the movie is also quite difficult to follow because, much like Carol/Captain Marvel, the viewers have no idea what is going on.
Despite being a weaker movie, it doesn’t mean this movie is bad. Captain Marvel is one of the best heroes that the MCU has given us. Despite all the odds stacked against her, she never stops fighting, which is highly inspirational. Seeing Nick Fury in his younger years served to be fairly enjoyable, as well as it was interesting to see what he was like before he became cynical and withdrawn. Despite not appearing until about the halfway point, Carol’s friend, Maria, and her daughter, Monica, are both really fun characters, with Monica, in particular, being quite funny. The movie, in regards to its aesthetic, also looks amazing, as the fight scenes are beautifully choreographed, and the set pieces are great.
This movie is very hard to explain. Despite being one of the weaker movies, the film still has its potential and a lot of good things going for it. Moreover, it also helped further excite me for the recently released Avengers: Endgame. However, the plot twist was super predictable and does bring my overall opinion of the movie down. Even still, if you are a fan of superheroes or girl power movies, you should definitely check this out.
