On October 3, 2025 the iconic and legendary pop singer Taylor Swift released her new album, The Life Of a Showgirl. It includes 12 songs and the track title song features Sabrina Carpenter, a “short n’ sweet” combination for the concluding song on the album.
This is her twelfth studio album release and she created it while on her epic Eras Tour, truly capturing the essence of what it’s like behind the scenes of a showgirl. The songs on this album are glamorous and romantic, very different from her last album The Tortured Poets Department which mostly feature melancholy and thematic tracks.
This album may sound upbeat and cheerful on the surface, but if you dissect each song you see that these songs tell the difficulties of what it is like living in the public eye, the criticism, the expectations, and the vulnerability. Though, there are songs on this album that are happy and romantic such as talking about how she finally found the one who “saved her from the Fate of Ophelia”.
To fully understand how diverse and in-depth this album is you have to learn what the songs on this album are about and not the surface level upbeat songs people might confuse them with.
“The Fate of Ophelia”
“The Fate of Ophelia” is the first track on the album, and the only song to have a music video. This song is all about how her fiance Travis Kelcey “saved her from the fate of Ophelia”, a Shakespearean character who was driven mad by love and eventually drowns herself.
Taylor Swift appeared on the U.K radio show HeartBreakfast on her album release date explaining, “The hook is someone comes into your life and rescues you from the fate of being driven mad by love.” That someone for her is Travis Kelcey as she also confirms on the podcast. This song is so much more than a happy, romantic song. It’s about how real true love can save you from yourself.
“Elizabeth Taylor”
“Elizabeth Taylor” is the second track on the album. This song is about Elizabeth Taylor, a Hollywood legend whose career was constantly overshadowed by her personal life, including her love life. Taylor Swift sounds as if she is pleading with Elizabeth Taylor to confirm with her that she has found the one.
“Opalite”
“Opalite” is the third track on the album. This song is also about Travis Kelcey, as his October birthstone is opalite. Though this song has a deeper meaning than just her romance with Kelcey, on the Track by Track version of the album on Amazon Music, Taylor Swift explains the song is about “choosing happiness, and getting through rough times, adversity, and really choosing your own joy and your own sort of path to joy.”
“Father Figure”
“Father Figure” is the fourth track on the album. This song is about a protective relationship with a “father figure” and the betrayal made by them. How she ended up having to protect herself from the very person she looked up too and thought would help her. During an appearance on BBC 1 on October 3, Taylor Swift states the song uses “the idea of a father figure” to “talk about power, power structures and the flipping of the power dynamics.”
“Eldest Daughter”
“Eldest Daughter” is the fifth track on the album and, like the rest of her albums, this is the saddest track on the album. This song is about accepting the love she thought she would never find. Even though this song may not be as tragic as her other track five songs, it still expresses insecurities found in happiness and how everything is not as easy to see or accept. Taylor Swift has found happiness and love with Kelcey and this song reflects how even sad things can be happy.
“Ruin The Friendship”
“Ruin The Friendship” is the sixth track on the album. This song is about regret and taking chances, telling a story of a high school girl with a crush and how she was scared to let her crush know how she feels. By the end of the song we learn that the crush has died and the regret of the girl not letting him know how she feels. From the wise words of Taylor Swift “My advice is always ruin the friendship / Better that than regret it for all time.”
“Actually Romantic”
“Actually Romantic” is the seventh track on the album. This song is the diss track on the album indirectly calling out a person. This song is about how a person is so obsessed with her it’s “actually romantic” how much time they spend on her. Instead of saying hurtful things about this person, Taylor Swift uses humor to explain how ridiculous this person is in her song, quoting “‘Cause it’s actually sweet/All the time you’ve spent on me/It’s honestly lovely/All the effort you’ve put in.”
“Wi$h Li$t”
“Wi$h Li$t” is the eighth track on the album. This song is about how instead of wishing for glamorous things in life she would rather wish for a simple life, how she would trade in her riches just to have Travis. Taylor Swift sings, “I just want you (Baby) / Have a couple kids, got the whole block looking like you.”
“Wood”
“Wood” is the ninth track on the album. This song is about finding a soulmate after being lucky in love. It’s an upbeat song about love and being happy to find the one for you.
“CANCELLED!”
“CANCELLED!” is the tenth track on the album. This song is about Taylor Swift’s experiences of judgment and being criticized for all her actions. How she has found her real friends through all the hate and scandals. This song explores subjects of judgment and hatred, but also friendship, and how even bad experiences can come with good outcomes. Taylor Swift shares her wise words, “At least you know exactly who your friends are/They’re the ones with matching scars.”
“Honey”
“Honey” is the eleventh track on the album. This song at surface level could seem like a song about her love with Travis Kelcey, but really it is about how words can have different meanings with different people. How people can use words of affection like “honey” in a condescending way, while others can use the words with affection and love.
“The Life of a Showgirl”
“The Life of a Showgirl” is the twelfth and final track on the album, featuring Sabrina Carpenter. This song tells the story of Kitty, a fictional seasoned showgirl passing her wisdom onto the next generation of showgirls without any glamour. The song spreads messages of bonds, the spotlight, and challenges of what life is like on and off the stage. Taylor Swift wanted the world to see the challenges of women in show business and she thought “who better to ask to be a part of this song than the ultimate showgirl, Sabrina Carpenter?”
This album is truly incredible and well written, and I recommend all to listen.
