Trevor Finn had an impressive wrestling season to say the least.
In the 2012-2013 campaign, the heavyweight touted a record of 29-9 and performed at his highest level late in the season and into the postseason. Winning 1st place in the District 22 Tournament, Finn advanced to the Region 6 Tournament. Placing 3rd in Regions, Finn earned a spot in the state tournament and had the opportunity to represent Middletown South Wrestling in Atlantic City.
“My favorite memory from this season was when I pinned the 3rd seed in 40 seconds during my Regions match,” Finn, the 6th seed, recalled.
The four year heavyweight wrestler really improved over his career at South. After finishing with a 14-17 record his junior year, Finn got to work over the offseason, improving by an astounding 15 wins in his senior year.
What prompted such an improvement? The coaching staff cites Finn’s work ethic.
“Trevor had a great off-season which was the key to his success,” Coach Kumfert said. “He ran 5 miles per day, lifted weights and wrestled multiple times per week. To improve from 14 wins to 29 wins as well as earning a district championship is very hard to do and his success is a prime of example of how hard work pays off.”
Finn, the recipient of the team’s Coach’s Award, gives the coaches the credit.
“Freshman year, I was not a good wrestler,” Finn laughed. “They really helped me to improve to the level I’m at today.”
Finn is currently undecided on his collegiate plans and is still entertaining the possibility of wrestling at the Division III level.
