The Middletown South Girls Basketball Team, after falling behind 12 in the 4th quarter, came back to take down rival Marlboro 80-77 in overtime to capture the Central Jersey Group IV State Championship on Tuesday, March 5th. It was also Coach Tom Brennan’s 400th career victory and 4th state title in the past 6 years.
Middletown South withstood a barrage of 18 Marlboro three-point shots from all over the court that kept Marlboro in front from the 2nd quarter until the closing minutes. The Eagles rallied late behind two key threes from senior forward Sam Keenan and two game-tying free throws from junior forward Kayla Richardson. Their scores got the game to a 64-64 deadlock. In overtime, Richardson took over and scored 10 points in four minutes to secure the victory.
Every Eagles starter finished in double digits; Richardson had 23, Keenan had 20, Isla Brennan had 15, and Stephanie Mayerhofer and Eve Pirie had 10 each. The Eagles move on to play Lenape on Thursday in the Group 4 Semifinals at Central Regional High School at 7 PM.
