Kara Gillman, Staff Writer

In December I caught up with Mr. Leone, and interviewed him for the Winter newsletter. South’s newest VP is a hockey fan!

What are your responsibilities here at South?

My responsibilities include parking, the paraprofessional staff, clubs and activities, fundraising, new teacher meetings as well as the big one: the Social Studies Department at North and South. I was in charge of paraprofessionals, clubs/activities and fundraising while at North. So, those are not new to me.

How long have you been working at South?

I have been at South since July 1st, 2015.

How did you first get into the field of education?

I graduated with a degree in English from Wagner College. Shortly thereafter, I started to attend graduate school for secondary education. I was hooked! I wanted to work with students, coach sports and generally be involved in education!

Have you worked at any other schools?

I have worked at Middletown High School North, Monsignor Farrell High School (Staten Island, NY), and Clarke County Public Schools(Clarke County, Georgia).

How is South different from where you have previously worked?

The expectation here is one of great success. Be it in the classroom, on the fields, in the art studio, or on the stage is irrelevant. There is a winning culture here at South and that enables students to reach higher and achieve more than they thought they could.

Is there anything unique about you that you would like to share with us?

Sure, and this is probably the quirky side of me, but I’m a huge hockey fan. My father had Ranger seasons tickets for many, many years. I, however bleed blue and white. Yes, the Toronto Maple Leafs are my bad habit, obsession and cause for great consternation all wrapped into one.

Welcome to South Mr. Leone!
