Foolish, Insane, and the Right Wing Watch

Once again last weekend, I found myself sitting down late at night unable to go to sleep. Thoughts and ideas were rushing through my head as I lay there trying to get them all out. Eventually after I realized I would not be able to get to sleep anytime soon, I began listening to an old stand up comedian, Bill Hicks. Eventually a topic he came across was the extreme right wing. This reminded me of a website my friend had once told me about. The website was called the “Right Wing Watch”, and displayed some completely abhorrent and completely implausible beliefs and theories. One story I came across was about a Utah man who was starving himself to prevent same sex marriage. I was appalled, but I kept reading.

The next one I read was about a man who claimed he was once a top intelligence officer, who says he has proof that Obama is trying to kill everyone and cause a nuclear war. This one I found erratic and humourous, due to the man’s idiotic and paranoid delusions. After twenty minutes of reading story after story, I came to the saddening realization that many Americans actually hold these ludicrous beliefs. The sidebar on the website contained “trending topics” such as Anti-Muslim, Anti-Gay, and marriage equality (which was not equal whatsoever). It was this one article though that sent me into an outrage. The title of the article was, “Renew America: Gay Marriage is A Satanic Plot To Kill Christians”.

How these writers even come up with theories like this, I do not know and neither will any rational thinking human being. It is truly unbelievable that some people can actually follow completely irrational and extreme views. The views brought up by the website show that there is still racism and bigotry in America. Many people believe that those were the days of the past, but clearly these ideas vary throughout the nation.

This website raises some very important issues. These issue are of civil liberties, bigotry, and the hypocrisy of extremist views. The Right Wing Watch exposes extremely hypocritical people who claim that they are trying to bring America back to the “good ol days” of freedom. While they promote their idea of freedom, they bring down the true meaning of liberty as they oppress gay rights, promote anti-Muslim beliefs, and condone racism. The public must first be aware of these ignorant people and their half-baked accusations in order to ultimately defeat them. Despite how insane these extreme beliefs are, people have the right to state what they believe, no matter how wrong or unjust they are.. They are rightly protected by the first amendment. This does not mean we should stand by and let them promote these ludicrous ideas though. Rational thinking Americans must exercise their first amendment rights in order to end the severe bigotry of the extremists.
