South’s Girl’s Cross Country team is undefeated for the second year in a row. Recently, the team beat Freehold Township and Howell, two of their most difficult rivals. According to Coach Clifton, the most satisfying victory was over Middletown North, giving the team the A-North Divisional title. The team’s final rank for the season is #6 in the Shore Conference.

Seniors Emily Burns and Caroline Kratka have guided the team since they began practice this summer, while Junior newcomers Delia Tota, Nicole Deus, and Jen Tregillies have added depth to the talented team all season. Impressive performances from underclassmen have been valuable contributions to the team’s record. “Sophomores Madison Brand and Shannon Addario have led the team to many victories.” Coach Clifton said. Brand has been the top runner since last season, and ran 20:12 in a 5,000 meter course at the Monmouth County Championships. Brand also holds the #13 female all-time record for South. Freshman Tess Bizzoso is the #2 varsity girl behind Brand, while freshmen Kathleen Shay and Taylor Marjamaa have reached the varsity level. At the Group Finals on November 14,  the team put up impressive times,  Madison Brand ran 20:44, Delia Tota 21:04, Tess Bizzoso 21:11, Shannon  Addario 21:25, Nicole Deus 21:47, Katie Spencer 21:58, and Jill Weimer 22:58.

Clifton attributes their great year to the team’s great chemistry and dedication, “It is a luxury for a coach to have a team that mixes hard work with fun,” No one wants to miss a practice or the opportunity to improve.”
