The South Girls Cross Country season, once again, was a massive success. The team won their division, were named Shore Conference champions, and took home state sectional titles. All of these victories brought them to The Meet of Champions, which took place on November 4th at Holmdel Park. The girls once again proved to be elite, and they placed fourth in the entire state of New Jersey. More recently, the girls ran at the Nike Regionals in New York state. They placed 10th overall while racing against teams from across the Northeast US.

The many triumphs of this team are due to the seven varsity runners: Maddie Brand, Shannon Addario, Kathleen Shay, Dani Smith, Ryanne M., and Michelle Coyotl. Senior Maddie Brand broke several records throughout her career at Middletown South, and just recently signed a letter of intent to continue her running career at the University of Michigan. This immensely talented team was not only a dominant force in New Jersey Cross Country, but they also were also a very tight knit group. Michelle Coyotl explains that dynamic, “Every single moment we spent together helped us to develop as a runner, competitors and teammates. All seven of us on the team continue to challenge each other no matter the circumstances.” She continues by bringing up her coaches, saying,  “Our coaches, the Cliftons, have done a significant job to mentally and physically prepare the squad.” It is clear that the success of the team was one that did not come easily, yet it was well deserved.
